Alpenglow Is Coming to Solana Mainnet Next Week

Solana’s most ambitious consensus overhaul, Alpenglow, will activate at epoch 1064 on Oct. 21st, around 15:00 UTC, per the Solana Foundation. It swaps out TowerBFT, the voting system Solana has run since genesis, and targets roughly 150 millisecond finality, down from about 12.8 seconds today. Votor first, Rotor later: Next week’s switch ships only Votor, Alpenglow’s new voting engine. Under Votor, validators trade signed votes directly and roll them into compact certificates. Rotor, the block-propagation half of the design, needs its own governance proposal and doesn’t have a date yet. Finality simplified: Solana’s “confirmed” and “finalized” states effectively merge, so bridges and exchanges no longer have to pick between speed and certainty.
